Is there life after death? Not according to Valerie. Following the accidental death of her husband, Randy, she Valerie was distraught. With her mother-in-law saying repeatedly that Randy was still with her, Valerie’s grief was amplified. Randy, had been the center of her life, and now he was gone. He was not with her. He died and was buried in a casket in the ground.
In spite of severe storm warnings, and against her in-laws' advice, Valerie set out for Maryland, where she and Randy had been planning to live. It took a tornado, and the words of a stranger to show Valerie exactly how to move on without Randy; or was it with him?

Reading short stories is a breeze for me, because the authors simply make long stories, short. Short stories are so driving, and they pull the reading, fast, from the beginning to the end, without preambles. This story was driving righty from the beginning. In the end, I had a smile on my face, because I was able to predict, just for once, where the story was leading me.Valerie, the main character was an unbeliever in the life after. There are many like her, who believe that death is the end of life, life, as we know it. However, the presence, or appearance of Dorene and Stephen in Valerie’s life, at a moment of great distress made her a believer after all.
This is a lovely story, an easy read, with just a misplaced word, or omission, not enough to spoil the story, but enough to lower my rating, because this is a short. I need my shorts to be perfect.

A Candle in the Darkness eBook Karen Black Reviews
Karen Black is awesome! I can't correctly tell how much I enjoyed this short story. Author Karen Black is a ghost story writer. I find it thrilling how her stories always have a shocking twist at the ending. I definitely didn't see that coming! I always recommend books, but this time I'm recommending the author! I can't wait to read her other titles. 'Mountain Justice," my next one!
Great short story, that tells a supernatural tale that is very believable. When Valerie's husband dies she finds herself headed home and alone. The weather forces her to stop at a motel where she gets a room and a lot more! The author does a great job with the feel to this story and does an amazing job making a short story feel like a complete tale. Well done.
In the short story Candle in the Darkness, by Karen Black, Valerie is dealing with the unexpected death of her husband. On his way home from military duty, Randy was killed in a freak plane crash.
Reeling with grief from her husband's death, Valerie fights her way through a violent storm. As a tornado rapidly approaches, she finds a roadside motel. The motel had been destroyed by a tornado forty years ago.
Along with the motel owners and a family of travelers, Valerie takes refuge in the cellar.
Ms. Black's wonderfully descriptive writing style is reminiscent of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards. Ms. Black takes the reader into the cellar, with the tornado roaring outside. The poignancy of the story will warm your heart, like the flame of the candle in the cellar.
The story is entertaining enough but a little on the predictable side... as soon as I read the "driving up to a vacant motel on a stormy night" bit, I could see where the story was going. Also, some details in the story felt over-explained.
I love this author. Sje is am amazing writer and h er stories come alive. I habe everything she has written
A Candle In the Darkness was a smooth easy and enjoyable read. I found the story so enjoyable to read, the descriptions were great bringing me back to my mamaw and papaw's cellar when we sheltered from tornadoes there as a child. I was sad to see this lovely story end so soon but found the whole experience fulfilling. Very nice job, Karen! Loved it!
"A Candle in the Darkness" is a short story about a woman who loses her husband in an accident and on the day of his funeral she chooses to drive home, but because of severe weather is forced to seek refuge at a Travel Inn. The owners are kind enough to get her in the cellar before the tornado touches down, she's later joined by another couple. After the storm passes they realize the owners have already went out and so they head into town, where the owners caring is well known.
